兒島善三郎 Kojima Zenzaburo

日本 1893-1962
生於日本福岡市。就讀於長崎醫學專門學校,後立志當畫家而退學前往東京,於1914年進入本鄉洋畫研究所,師事岡田三郎助。不過他並未考上東京美術學校,因此之後即靠自學來學習西畫。1924–1928年間前往法國進行創作,除了西洋的古典繪畫之外,他特別受到巴黎畫派的畫家們,尤其是安德烈‧德蘭 (André Derain)的強烈影響。除了創作,兒島善三郎也參與獨立美術協會的創設,兒島等人所提倡的「日本的西畫」之主張,亦即以日本本土的繪畫形態來接收法國野獸派畫風的主張,更對當時的西畫壇產生劇烈的影響。
旅歐返日後,兒島的畫風再次回歸到東洋風格,他回國後在東京代代木的畫室仍持續以裸女為題材創作,只是與過去在巴黎所描繪的那種以量體及骨骼肌理為主的裸體不同,如畫作《紅色背景》所示,比起人體的量感,畫家優先表現的是靠墊以及沙發的質感,由此可知兒島在繪畫風格上的表現主義傾向。此作於1931年隨獨立美術協會展覽巡迴至臺灣展出,展期八天,參觀人數達一萬二千多人,展覽盛況空前,然而裸女題材是否能展出在當時還是引起一番議論。

Japanese 1893 - 1962
Born in Fukuoka, Japan. After attending Nagasaki Medical College, he left school to become a painter and went to Tokyo, where he entered the Hongo Institute of Foreign Painting in 1914, studying under Saburosuke Okada. From 1924 to 1928 he travelled to France, where, in addition to Western classical painting, he was particularly influenced by the Parisian school of painters, particularly André Derain. In addition to his work, Yoshisaburo was also involved in the creation of an independent art association, and the idea of Western painting in Japan advocated by Kojima and others, that is, the idea of taking over the French Fauvist style of painting from the local Japanese form, had a strong influence on the Western painting scene at the time.
After his return to Europe, Kojimas painting style returned to the Eastern style, and he continued to paint nude women in his studio in Yoyogi, Tokyo, but unlike the nudes he had painted in Paris, where the main focus was on the volume and texture of the bones, as shown in Red Background, the artist gave priority to the texture of the cushions and sofas rather than the volume of the body. This is an indication of Kojimas expressive tendencies in his painting style. This work toured to Taiwan in 1931 with the exhibition of the Independent Art Association, which was attended by over 12,000 visitors over an eight-day period, and the exhibition was an unprecedented success, although there was some debate as to whether the subject of nude women could be exhibited.
